COW-CALF AGRIBUSINESS MODEL
About 50% of meat produced in Italy comes from the fattening of animals from foreign countries and the main exporter to our country is France, with over 70% of the re-stall supplied.
Annually Italy imports a bewildering number of young cattle to be fattened that vary on average between 1,100,000 and 1,300,000 cattle. This situation arises from the marginal presence on our territory of suckler cows compared to the bovine heritage and which places Italy in 16th place in Europe, highlighting a serious criticality for the future of national zootechnics, in consideration of the increasingly widespread and pressing demand for cattle re-stall by various European and not-European countries.
The opportunity to increase the number of cow-calf line farms (100% made in Italy) to support and contribute to the request by the meat supply chains to increase the number of calves born in Italy, is strengthened thanks to several factors:
- the continuous request for re-stalls by Italy
- the sensitivity of consumer towards national products characterized by a high and constant quality standard
- the need on the part of the marketing sector (from large organized distribution to small butchers) to offer its customers a meat that, in addition to being of high quality, clearly differentiates itself (Among the distinctive characteristics, in compliance with a high quality standard, the origin stands out and specifically “meat obtained from animals born and raised in Italy”, therefore 100% made in Italy)
